Nokia gave up its own mobile operating system

Undergoing a prolonged crisis Finnish Nokia has stopped work on a new mobile platform, through which hoped to challenge the phones based on Android. The company hoped that the Linux-platform on the stage of development known as Meltemi, will replace long time used the Series 40, but eventually closed the project as part of the massive reduction in costs.

Experts believe that the rejection of the Meltemi Finnish manufacturer threatens the loss of a strong position in the mass market segment (with the cost of handsets in the $ 100-200). Here, according to IDC, Nokia, despite the losses, is still controlled in the first quarter, more than 20% of sales.

On the platform Meltemi became known in the middle of last year from a leaked video from the network performance of the head of Nokia Stephen Elop. The company itself has never officially confirmed the existence of the project, and to curtail it became known thanks to insider information.

Recall that, according to a published report for the second quarter, once the lead producer losses increased by more than 3 times, reaching 1.41 billion euros. Sales of smart phones for a few months decreased by 34%, even forcing Nokia to the unprecedented decline of prices in the U.S. market: a new tube Lumia 900 fell from 100 to 50 dollars (for comparison, in Russia the same phone offered to buy for 25,000 rubles).

It is expected that in the third quarter, the company will continue to go into negative against stiff competition from Samsung and Apple. The head of the company has already announced that plans to reduce jobs have increased from ten to twenty thousand employees.
