Mozilla company and its partner Telefónica showed samples of portable devices running the new operating system, Firefox OS. New smartphones will be available in Brazil in the beginning of next year.
Firefox OS is a web-based platform, which is based on the popular mobile browser. Therefore, applications that run on the new smartphones will not be permanently assigned to a particular operating system, such as iOS, Android or Windows Phone. The above approach ensures many advantages. For example, users who choose to buy a new cell phone, do not have to worry about its compatibility with familiar applications and existing content.
The intuitive user interface places like Firefox OS mobile platform Android. Mozilla representatives also argue that one of the main advantages offered by the OS is for exceptional performance. Site Explorer AllThings, present at the launch, said quite a high performance mobile phone key features, as well as games downloaded from the online store Firefox OS Marketplace.
According to available information, Firefox-smartphones will come with 15 preset programs created under the Web standard HTML5. Includes tools for working with e-mail and text messaging, calendar, browser Firefox and the application to work with the camera. As in other modern mobile operating systems, each application will be submitted to a separate icon on the home screen. The developers have also been claimed to support the functions «pinch-to-zoom» and embedded editing photographs. By the way, despite the "online" nature of the new operating system, users can work with the most important applications even when not connected to the Internet. According to Chris Lee (Chris Lee), Product Manager Firefox OS, some programs are able to store data in the cache.
The first devices based on the new mobile operating system will be available in early 2013. They will spread the company Telefónica, which offers its services in 18 countries in Latin America and Europe. The list of partners includes Mozilla and other big telecom companies (Sprint, Deutsche Telekom, Smart and Telecom Italia) and manufacturers (TCL, ZTE and Qualcomm).
The creators of Firefox OS is not going to compete with manufacturers of powerful and expensive smartphones. Their main task is placing on the market today-end mobile devices, offered at an affordable price. However, Mozilla plans can not be called unambitious. Currently, the company is standardizing 40 additional API-interface that Web developers will have access to various mobile phones (such as vibration, the mechanisms of the dial, the charging battery, etc.) and be able to expand the functionality of their applications.
