Forget the Wi-Fi, connect through bulbs

Do you use wireless internet anywhere in the store, stealing Wi-Fi from a neighbor, or share a channel with some other members of the conference, you may have often frustrated because of the slow speed when the network is involved in more than one person. As soon as more and more people have access to a wireless network, it becomes harder and harder to catch quite a workable signal.

However, radio waves are just one part of the spectrum, which can give you a signal. What if the Internet connection, we will use other waves?

A German physicist named Harald Haas came up with a solution that he calls "the data through the light" - fiber optic reception by sending data through the LED lamp, the intensity of the emitted light are faster than the human eye can detect. The same principle underlies the remote control, but in this case, the technology is much more powerful.

Haas said that his invention, which he calls the D-Light, can provide a data rate of more than 10 megabits per second, faster than your normal internet connection speed. In the future, as it seems, all laptops, smartphones and planshetniki will be connected to the Internet through the room lighting.

Based on this technology, you can come up with very different use of it from public access to the Internet for street lighting to automatically guided vehicles that communicate with the headlights. Also, the data coming through the visible spectrum, may alleviate concerns that the electromagnetic waves of Wi-Fi connection adversely affect your health.

Transparent, flexible and heat-resistant chips are to replace the flash memory

Chemist James Tour (James M. Tour) from Rice University (Houston,. Texas, USA) presented an interesting discovery of the group, which is engaged in organic synthesis.

They managed to create a new type of nonvolatile memory chips with amazing properties. In addition to high-density data from multiple states of the cells, the new chips can be stacked like paper, they can withstand heat up to 538 º C and, finally, they are almost completely transparent. Thus, the memory can now be placed directly on the screen.

As said Dr. Tour, the first samples of the chip included a layer of graphene and other carbon-containing materials on the surface of supposedly inert insulating layer of silicon oxide (actually - a chemically pure form of quartz). However, after a series of experiments revealed that silica itself is a very suitable material. As a result, scientists were able to opt out of graphene.

The design of the memory chips provides two pins on one bit of information, although in traditional chips they need three. This interesting and unusual property allows new cells to pack them into three-dimensional structure, which is much more efficient in terms of information storage density than traditional two-dimensional chips.

Another remarkable feature of the new chips - the ratio of current conditions in the "on" and "off". In the test samples, this ratio reaches 000:1 1000, that is, the current level in the cell, which stores information, a million times greater than the maximum level of current in an empty cell. According to the developers, this factor will be very attractive to manufacturers because markedly reduces the requirements for the control elements of the chip and the parameters of the electric power supply for memory chips.

Because the new chips have not only transparent but also flexible and can be used in the manufacture of touch screens for mobile phones and other devices, and so represent a grid of electronic sensors (usually resistive or capacitive). Thus, we can significantly increase the amount of memory devices, touch screens themselves will become less brittle. The implementation of the memory screen also helps to save space inside the device, freeing it for other important components, so that the device will become even thinner than it is today. Finally, these chips can be used to display information on the windshields of airplanes, cars and other vehicles.

In July 2012 the creators of new transparent memory chip planned to send their samples to the International Space Station to test their resistance to space radiation. In addition, negotiations with a number of producers regarding plans to introduce technology into mass production.

A new global database Wikidata

Fund Wikimedia Foundation, behind the creation of the famous online encyclopedia, has announced the launch of its first major project in 2006 under the name Wikidata.

The new project involves creating a database for the use of hybrid cars and people, and make the knowledge it will, and users, as is the case with Wikipedia, and machinery. Support for the project has already claimed a number of large companies and private investors.

Strictly speaking, trying to turn a huge library of knowledge Wikipedia into a structured data source has already been made. For example, the project DBpedia tried to create such a system, but it was one-sided - client machines could not make it to my edits. The new project Wikidata, in turn, not only makes the data available for humans and machines - it allows you to make changes on the face and the living and the inanimate computer systems.

The project aims to develop Wikidata semantic database, available for reading machines should help not only over the Internet as a whole, but also the Wikipedia. Structure plan for all language versions of Wikipedia containing knowledge of the same concepts. To date, the maximum coverage of the information available in English, German, French and Dutch, but other languages, including Russian, are far behind.

Structuring data Wikidata will automatically respond to requests such as "ten largest cities in the world, where the mayor is a woman." At the moment, the answers to such questions can be found in the so-called Wikipedia Schedules, which are prepared by hand. The project will help to shape Wikidata ikhi automatically.

Starting work on creating a database Wikidata is the German branch of the Wikimedia Deutschland. In the future we plan to transfer authority for management and maintenance of the international headquarters of the Wikimedia. Fully international phase of the project should start in March 2013. The entire project is divided into three phases, the first of which includes the creation of pages for each record Wikidata Wikipedia on all 280-plus languages. All figures are, therefore, will be stored in a single source - the database Wikidata. Also in the first phase is planned to centralize the links between different language versions of Wikipedia - this phase should be completed by August 2012.

In the second phase, the editors will be able to add and use the data Wikidata (completion date - December 2012). Finally, the third phase will provide the automatic creation of lists and graphs based on data Wikidata, so that the Wikipedia article will be filled, including the results of processing database Wikidata.

Already, the development of the project Wikidata receives strong support - funding of $ 1.3 million half provides the Institute of Artificial Intelligence Allen, who was created by Paul Allen (Paul Allen), co-founder of Microsoft, in 2010 Another quarter of the initial funding provided Gordon Foundation and Betty Moore (Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation) and a quarter - by Google. Incidentally, it is the latter, apparently, plans to leverage the results of the project Wikidata in its search technology, because, in fact, a problem - a lot of disparate structured data and unstructured to give answers to queries using semantic special algorithms.

Supercomputers are looking for an answer to the fundamental question of the universe

The international team of scientists reported in the online edition of Physical Review Letters on the landmark achievement in subatomic physics - Numerical simulation of kaon decay into two pions using the fastest supercomputers.

During the opening at the Brookhaven National Laboratory for this phenomenon, the authors were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1964. It was the first experimental evidence of parity violation charges - no symmetry between particles and antiparticles - and the first step to getting an answer to the question - why our world is made of matter rather than antimatter.

Calculations, modeling one aspect of this decay, required the development of innovative techniques and the use of the most powerful modern computers. They are based on new theoretical results obtained after 1964, and recent experiments performed at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory, and the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The project required collaboration specialists Brookhaven Laboratory and Research Center of RIKEN, Columbia University, Connecticut, Southampton, Washington, and Edinburgh, the Max Planck Institute of Physics.

A special problem is the unprecedented scale of the scatter calculation is 18 orders of magnitude, from sub-atomic level interactions to the size of the bubble chamber. Calculations of the collapse, according to the methods of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is happening at the nodes of the space-time lattice, performed the statistical algorithm of the Monte Carlo method. They demanded 54 million hours of supercomputer CPU IBM BlueGene / P, installed at the Argonne National Laboratory (ALCF). For preliminary calculations used a prototype computer QCDOC (QCD on a chip) and a series of IBM BlueGene.

This work has allowed experts to estimate the unknown quantity, is important for understanding kaon decay in the aspect of parity violation charges. Direct numerical calculation of this parameter, as well as the conversion is the result of increased accuracy would require more computer resources.

To do this, members of the international project are hoping to use the power BlueGene / Q, the next generation of supercomputers, IBM. These machines will have a speed of 10-20 times higher than that of modern analogs. Over the next few months, they plan to install many of the leading research centers, including the ALCF, Brookhaven Laboratory, University of Edinburgh and laboratory KEK (Japan).

IT-giant is back to direct sales of Nexus-aids

Android tablets have long been on the market, but Google has not yet managed to achieve such success, both in terms of smartphones, where Android has surpassed iOS serious market share. Of course, the search giant may not be satisfied with this situation. As a key partner like Samsung has publicly acknowledged its poor sales of tablets, emergency measures are needed.
Recently edition of The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that Google is going to start this year, sales of tablets under its own brand. To this already hinted Google chairman Eric Schmidt in December, and the mass of the recurring rumors reinforce confidence. However, the WSJ has added new data: Google applies the strategy of direct sales through its own hardware store - something like trying to use the company in 2010 with the launch of the first smartphone Nexus.

This strategy uses Google competitors in the mobile sphere - Apple and Amazon - and she, according to WSJ, is designed to increase sales of Android-low tablets. It is interesting that journalists report is not about one tablet under the brand name Google, and a few from different manufacturers like Samsung and ASUS. Nevertheless, states that the ASUS device will be released this year first.
The first tablet Google may resemble a 7-inch ASUS Eee Pad MeMO 370T, shown at CES 2012

At Google, and now have a website where users can compare the different smartphones and tablets Android, but when you click on it to "buy" the consumer goes to a third-party online stores. Now the fundamental difference will be the most direct sales of Google. Interestingly, the first tablet, presumably implemented under the brand Nexus, will produce the ASUS, but not owned by Google, a company Motorola. But in the long term we can expect out and Nexus-tablet by Motorola.

Does it increase the sales of Android-tablet? If the rumors are that to compete with the Amazon Kindle Fire first Nexus-tablet will cost around $ 200 (or even $ 150) is correct, it can hardly doubt the popularity of such devices. After Fire sold well - thanks to him in a moment Amazon became the world's second producer of tablets.

Perhaps the desire to attack Google on the tablet market due to the delivery of some products from Apple: if in 2010 iPad occupied about 80% of the market, we ended 2011 with a share of 54.7%. In addition, close the output devices with Windows 8 and, possibly, on the eve of this event - the perfect time for a preemptive attack.
